Not for your first few lessons. You should arrive wearing loose fitting clothes ( workout gear is ideal ), which allow you to move easily. It's difficult to kick with tight jeans!Once you are sure you would like to learn Karate, then you should purchase a Gi ( uniform ). We can help you with measuring up and where to buy them from.

You do not need private medical insurance. Once you are sure you would like to start learning Karate, you will need a Karate license. This gives you membership to the SKKIF association and allows you to take your grading.

If you follow the instructions carefully you should not get hurt. That said, Karate is a contact sport and you should expect small knocks and bruises. We do not practice full contact kumite, but you should expect to participate in some light sparring.

Yes! Karate is a great way to boost your fitness levels and strengthen your muscles and joints. Combined with a healthy diet Karate has many proven health benefits over a sedentry lifestyle.

There are several costs to consider before starting Karate:-

• Your Gi ( training suit ) - this is a one-off payment
• Your SKKIF membership - this is due annually in January
• Each training session - you pay as you go, you do not need to pay in blocks in advance
• Gloves and pads - these are optional

As all physical activities put stress on your body it is a good idea to talk to your doctor before you start. That said, people with all sorts of pre-existing health conditions and disabilities train in Karate all over the world. Take things slowly and listen to your body. Karate can be a safe way to exercise.

We have classes twice a week, Tuesday and Thursdays from 18:30 - 20:00. You should aim to train at least once per week but will benefit more training twice a week.

When you join the association you will start at 10th Kyu. This is your first belt and is white. Gradings take place every 3 months and you will be invited to grade when your Sensei ( teacher ) believes you are ready. We do not give out belts for simply showing up!
